- Left Wrights Bay about 10 am. It was quite cool and
overcast. Last night was really cold. We headed into Kingston SE
via Pinks Beach to check out the free camping sites there. That one
wasn't good but the one at Wyomi Beach beside the store was worth staying at
for a few days. Kingston SE was just down the road so we drove around for
a while looking for the dump point. Eventually found it. It was
good as there was a wash down bay for vehicles there too so we used the dump
point topped up our water tanks and washed the van too. Left Kingston SE
knowing we would be back to stay one day. After Kingston SE was the area
known as the Coorong. It is a chain of salt water lakes that are between
the coastal dunes and the road. The condition of the road was good and
was really flat so much easier going than all the hills. We called into the 42
mile crossing campground but the road in was very corrugated and the camp
wasn't worth the drive. Stopped at Salt Creek for lunch and a cuppa and
kept going. Just down the road there was a roadside stall selling fresh
mullet, rabbits and kangaroo steaks. We pulled in to check out the mullet
and bought a kilo. They had only just been caught that morning out of the
Coorong. We bought whole fish that had been deheaded and gutted.
They were only as big as the whiting we catch at home so a lot smaller
mullet than we are used to. We got 11 fish for $12 so we were both
looking forward to tea. Anyway on through Meningie a nice little town
beside Lake Albert and on to cross the Murray River on the ferry. It is
provided free of charge 24 hours a day. They squeezed a few cars and us
on and took us over. That was a bit of fun. We are now on the Fleurieu
Peninsula and travelling on the Fleurieu Way. On the other side was the
small town of Wellington and just past that was Langhorne Creek Rest Area where
we decided we'd pull up for the night. There was quite a few vans in
already but we found a fairly flat spot clear of the trees and settled in.
We had a couple of drinks and then cleaned up the mullet, coated them in
lemon pepper and Pa cooked them whole on the Weber along with some potato
wedges. Yum, yum. They were beautiful. It is so much warmer
here so we didn't freeze that night
