21/4/2012  -  Another beautiful day today with lots of sunshine.  We said goodbye to Greg and Dell who are leaving today.  Its a scenic tour day for us today without the van.  We are going  to drive further along the Great Ocean Road.  It will be a lot easier than doing it when the van is on behind.  We headed out about 9am and took what they call the Blue road out of Johanna Beach (we came in on the Red road).  We could see why they said don't take your van over the Blue road.  It was hilly, dirt, corrugated and very narrow.  We went past many dairy farms and there were big rolling hills everywhere with a glimpse of the coast every so often.  We went through the next town of Lavers Hill, just a small place with a general store and pub.  Princeton was next but it was like a dead town with almost everything shut down.  We checked out the Recreational Reserve campground there which looked okay for $20 a night.  Then it was on to the 12 apostles although now there is only 7. We pulled up in the car park and walked under the road, down the walkway. Then you come upon them and the sight nearly takes your breath away. These huge pillars of sandstone just jutting up out of the sea. They look good in photos and on TV but none of that does them justice.  They are so majestical.  Got some great photos and video.  It was then on to Lock Ard Gorge which was just fantastic.  We walked down the steps and went into the gorge where the water comes in.  This is where the ships apprentice and a young girl passenger off the Lock Ard ship were washed ashore when the ship sank years ago.  He dragged her ashore, put her in the cave there and went for help.  We then moved on through Port Campbell and on to The Arch, London Bridge, Thunder Bay and The Grotto.  The Arch is another massive sandstone structure that looks like an arch and London Bridge looks like a bridge with the first span missing.  It has fallen into the sea.  The Grotto is great too.  It has a long staircase down into it and at the bottom there is a hole in the rock and some rock pools that are crystal clear.  We sure have done some walking today and a lot of it up and down stairs.  Then it was on through Curdies inlet, Peterborough that has a lookout and a golf course that is on either side of the road (have to watch for little white balls flying over the road), Bay of Martyrs, more sandstone structures, Nullawarre, the last town on the Great Ocean Road, Allansford that has a Cheese Factory (Pa would love to go to that) and on to Warrnambool.  Did a bit of a stock up there for food and went to BCF and Rays Outdoors and bought a bit of fishing gear and bait.  Had a sausage sizzle for a very late lunch at Bunnings and headed home.  The trip was a lot faster going back without all the stops.  It has been a fantastic day.  Worth all the kilometres to get here.
