1/5/2012  -  Left Langhorne Creek Rest Area at 9 am. We drove through the town of Langhorne and it was full of lovely old buildings and wineries.  One of them was Belvidere Winery and it was huge with very big vats.  There was also farms growing olives and lots and lots of sheep.  The area looked really dry and most of the dams were well down.  We passed through Goolwa which is quite a big town.  It is very well kept and is at the mouth of the Murray River where it runs out into the Spencer Gulf.  Then through Middleton, a lovely town with a nice surf beach.  We were experiencing very strong cross winds and could feel the van getting blown around.  Port Elliot was the next town with lots of new homes.  We think this is probably more like an outer suburb of Victor Harbour as it is only 5 klms down the road.  Victor Harbour is big with all the services and supermarkets etc. and is right on the coast.  We fuelled up at Woolies here and paid $1.48 with a voucher. The Beachfront Caravan Park looks nice and would be a good place to stay for a few days to check out this area.  It was hilly from Victor Harbour and the rain caught up with us.  We headed on to Rapid Bay Campground all the while going up and down hills.  The first turnoff was dirt and corrugated and the road down to the bay was very steep.  We'll know it when we leave.  The cruiser will have a good steady chug back up.  The campground is lovely with lots of green grass, is nice and flat and is right beside the water.  There are only a few other vans here so we have a good pick of spots.  The toilets are spotless too. We got set up, put up the awning and got the chairs out.  Wasn't long before the wind started and the rain did too.  It got very cold so after braving it outside for a while we decided to wimp it inside.  The sun did peek out a few times throughout the afternoon but it didn't get any warmer.  We checked the beach out and was surprised that it was all gravel and rock with very little sand. No shells here. The caretaker came around to collect the fees and we realised he was living in one of the other vans on site.  Night soon settled in and so did we.
