17/4/2012 - We left the campground at 7am and headed up to where the ferry docks. We were the first vehicle at the dock. The weather was good although fairly cold but the bay was pretty calm. The ferry pulled in about 7.45 and we were the second vehicle to board. Got some great photos of the cruiser and van going onto the ferry. We went upstairs and stood on the top deck for the crossing which was great. A real highlight of the trip. The trip took 45 mins. to dock in Queenscliff. Queenscliff is a really old town with lots of lovely old buildings. Then it was on through Port Lonsdale, Ocean Grove where there is a good caravan park and is only 30 to 45 mins from the ferry terminal. A good place to stay on the way back. Then through Torquay, the start of the Great Ocean Road and Anglesea where we stocked up on bread and milk and had Moko. Lorne, Wye River and Apollo Bay were the next towns. The Great Ocean Road is different to what I expected. Parts of it do meander around the rugged cliffs overlooking the sea and sometimes it heads inland past farms but the whole time you are climbing or descending hills. The lookout points come up so fast that with a caravan on behind it is hard to pull in and take photos. I just kept taking photos the whole time we were driving and some video. Must have taken hundreds by the time we stopped for the day but the scenery was pretty spectacular. Just past Apollo Bay was a rest area we were headed for called Johanna Beach. We drove in on a dirt road for a couple of kilometres and there was the campground. It had lovely green grass and very open and a bit hilly. There were a couple of sections to it so we parked up and walked around to find a good spot. We chose the furtherest one on top of a hill with dunes behind us. It was perfect for the solar on the van. At that stage there was only 1 other van there in that section. Once we got set up we had some lunch and went for a walk down the beach. It was just beautiful with lots of lovely white sand and the water was lovely and clean and clear. The sand on the beach was so soft. Even down at the waters edge was soft so it made it really hard to walk on. Good exercise though. Not a lot of different shells here. We found a couple of good gutters that we thought would be good to fish. Back to camp for a lazy afternoon (needed it after that walk) and happy hour.
